5 Ways to Get Children Excited About Taking Care of Their Smiles

Taking care of your teeth and gums is an important skill for every child to develop, but to do so, some kids may need a little extra encouragement. If you’re ready to teach your little one the value of excellent oral health, here are five important ways you can help make it fun and easy for a lifetime of smiles!

Get Connected

If your child is a fan of Disney or of video games and has access to a smart phone or tablet, they may enjoy Magic Timer, Disney’s collaboration with Oral-B. The app times your child’s tooth brushing sessions and incorporates their favorite characters into the fun!

Choose The Right Dentist

Your child’s dentist matters. After all, if they don’t feel safe going, they’re not going to want to attend their appointments, and they may not even want to take care of their teeth on their own. A pediatric dentist can help make going to the dentist a lot more fun, so they’re excited about their oral health and are more likely to be responsible for it at home.

Be a Positive Role Model

Though it may not seem like it, your child is paying attention to you and learning by example. This includes both your good habits and your bad ones, too. Be a good role model and join them in their oral hygiene routine. Watching mom and dad brush and floss can help them improve their technique and show them that yes, even grown-ups must care for their teeth and gums every day!

Seal the Deal

If getting your child to care for their teeth is a constant struggle, speak to their dentist about whether they’re a good candidate for dental sealants. This non-invasive treatment creates a barrier on top of their molars to protect them from oral bacteria and debris that could otherwise get trapped and cause cavities.

Make it Fun

Let your child pick out their own oral hygiene gear, like a fun, colorful toothbrush, special toothpaste, and flavored dental floss. You can even scour your local bookshop for tooth-related books featuring their favorite characters heading to the dentist, brushing their teeth, or getting fillings.

Remember, a lifetime of excellent oral health starts at home, but your child may need a little additional support to get started. Try these tips to show them how brushing, flossing, and visiting the pediatric dentist can be fun!
