It’s officially back-to-school season, which means its time to jump headfirst back into the chaos of the school year. Between homework, extracurricular activities, and social obligations, your child has a lot to juggle. But don’t let their oral health fall by the wayside this semester. Here are a few ways you can help them make the grade and ace their oral health exams this school year!

Look Ahead

It can be hard to know what you’ll be doing six months from now but take a moment to look at your child’s school calendar and determine the best time to bring them in for their semi-annual exams and cleanings. Is there a school break or day off that is convenient for you and won’t require them to miss school? Book now so you get the time and date you want.

Make Healthy Choices

Smart dietary choices start at home. If you pack their lunches and snacks, be sure to select healthy options that are safe for their teeth, like nuts, dairy, fruit, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains. Provide them with a reusable water bottle so they don’t rely on sugary or acidic drinks. If they purchase lunch at school, encourage them to make smart decisions and decide in advance what types of snacks they are allowed to buy.

Pack Their Bags

Does your child have braces? Send them prepared with a braces care kit that includes everything they need to keep their teeth clean and healthy throughout the day. Make sure they know to brush after eating to keep their teeth and orthodontic equipment clean. Include items such as:

  • A toothbrush
  • Dental floss
  • Floss threaders
  • A small mirror
  • Braces brushes
  • Dental wax

Keep Your Guard Up

Does your child play sports? A mouthguard is an excellent way to protect their teeth during physical activity. Your dentist can fit them for a custom guard that is both effective and comfortable to wear.

Stick to a Routine

It can be easy to get overwhelmed with so much going on, but don’t let a busy schedule get in the way of your child’s oral hygiene. Make sure they are brushing and flossing their teeth before bed each night and brushing in the morning before they head out the door.  Sure, skipping a night or two here or there probably won’t cause any damage, but if avoiding a routine becomes the routine itself, they could be making their mouth vulnerable to gum disease and cavities.

Remember, back-to-school season should be an exciting and fun time in your child’s life, but that doesn’t mean they should neglect their oral health. Encourage them to follow these helpful tips and they’ll be sure to get an A+ on their next dental exam!
