Just this year, a new study conducted by New York University and published in JAMA Network Open showed that not only can FDA-approved silver diamine fluoride treat cavities, but it can prevent them from developing just as well! Not only is this preventive treatment non-invasive, but it can help preserve temporary teeth and prevent premature tooth loss that can lead to future development of orthodontic problems. Read on to learn more about the study and how SDF could benefit your child’s oral health.
What Does the Study Say?
Earlier this year, in February, New York University published a study where they provided nearly 3,000 schoolchildren with silver diamine fluoride, which is a treatment used to help arrest cavities. They wanted to test the effectiveness of SDF alongside the standard of care for cavity prevention, dental sealants, to see which would be the most effective at curbing decay.
A single sealant and SDF treatment were given to each child, and the results showed that they both yielded similarly effective results, preventing roughly 80% of cavities and keeping around 50% of cavities from becoming worse.
What is Silver Diamine Fluoride?
Silver diamine fluoride is an all-encompassing cavity treatment that is used to not only arrest cavities, but also prevent them from developing down the road as well. It’s a colorless liquid that has been FDA-approved to be used as treatment for problems like tooth sensitivity, and the process of applying it is completely non-invasive. Using a small applicator, their dentist will brush the liquid atop the affected tooth and allow it to dry.
SDF is a great option for smaller children who may not be able to sit still long enough for a tooth-colored filling to be placed. It’s also relatively affordable and only takes a moment to apply. In some cases, reapplication of the silver diamine fluoride may be necessary for the best results.
Tips for Preventing Cavities in Children
Cavities are among the most common oral health problems that affect children because they’re still learning how to properly take care of their smiles. However, with routine preventive care and timely treatment, parents can stop decay from becoming worse, leading to problems that may require more invasive procedures, like tooth infections. Here are some additional preventive measures you can take to help protect your child’s smile from cavities:
- Encourage them to maintain a balanced diet
- Ensure they drink plenty of water throughout the day
- Take them to their pediatric dentist every six months for checkups and cleanings
- Help them build a good dental hygiene routine of brushing and flossing daily
With effective preventive treatments like silver diamine fluoride and dental sealants, combined with good oral hygiene, you can help protect your favorite smile from the common threat of decay!
