If your child’s baby teeth have been emerging, you’ve probably been thinking about what you can do to get your little one through this notoriously uncomfortable period. The end of this process is usually signaled by the emergence of the two-year molars, the final four baby teeth that erupt inside your child’s mouth; however, this can really make things unpleasant for your child. Here’s what you need to know about these molars and how you can counter some of the discomforts they cause.

What Are Two-Year Molars?

Simply put, two-year molars are the last four molars and final baby teeth to erupt inside a child’s mouth—and they have a reputation for causing a bit of discomfort upon their arrival. They generally make an appearance between 20 and 33 months and are located next to the canine (cuspid) teeth. They’re the furthest back set of teeth that children develop until their wisdom teeth arrive several years later. It’s also worth noting that since every child’s mouth is different, these molars might erupt one by one or simultaneously.

Indicators for Emerging Two-Year Molars

There are luckily a few signs you can watch for that indicate your child’s two-year molars are beginning to erupt. It’s worth noting that not all children will show visible signs of discomfort at this time; however, be on the lookout for the following:

  • Irritability and drastic mood changes
  • Excessive drooling
  • Sore and irritated gums
  • The tendency to chew on objects or clothing

Tips for Easing Your Child’s Discomfort

You can alleviate your child’s pain due to molar eruptions with a combination of different home remedies and medications. Some things to try include:

  • Placing a cool, wet gauze pad on the gums.
  • Using your finger to gently massage the area.
  • Rubbing a cool spoon on the gums (just don’t let your child bite the spoon).
  • Letting your child chew on a wet, clean washcloth
  • Providing hard or crunchy foods for toddlers, such as carrots, apples, peeled cucumbers, and more.
  • Using medication that is recommended for young children, such as Tylenol.

The discomfort caused by the emergence of two-year molars might seem like a lot for your child to deal with; however, by understanding what’s going on and following these tips, you can be of great help to your little one!
